From discovery to impact: Why adoption is the top priority for UK health and life sciences

Our recently launched animated Impact Report highlights something that should encourage everyone working in health and life sciences. Across the West Midlands, innovation is already improving outcomes for patients, reducing pressure on health and care services and creating economic value for the region. Yet as I reflect on the stories behind those results, one lesson stands out above all others: innovation only delivers impact when it is adopted at scale. The technologies and approaches making the greatest difference today are not necessarily the newest, but those that have successfully moved from idea to implementation. 

When people talk about the strength of the UK's life sciences sector, the conversation often centres on discovery. Yet the true measure of success is not the number of breakthroughs we create, but the difference those breakthroughs make to people's lives. 

The UK is not short of innovation. We have world-leading research, pioneering technologies and exceptional scientific talent. The challenge facing life sciences today is turning that innovation into impact through adoption at scale. Only then can we realise its full potential for patients, the NHS and the economy. 

Every year, promising technologies, treatments and new approaches emerge with the potential to transform healthcare. Yet there can be many years spent navigating the gap between proof of concept and widespread implementation. For patients waiting for earlier diagnosis, more effective treatment or better access to care, those delays matter and have a direct impact on patient outcomes. 

As we mark Life Sciences Week, it is worth asking a simple question: how do we ensure that innovation reaches the people who need it most, more quickly? 

The answer lies in stronger collaboration between industry, healthcare providers, researchers, policymakers and patients themselves. Innovation cannot be viewed as a linear process that begins in a laboratory and ends with regulatory approval. Success depends on creating the conditions for adoption from the very beginning. 

The NHS's 10-Year Health Plan sets out a bold vision for the future, centred on prevention, earlier intervention and greater use of technology to support better care. Artificial intelligence, digital health, diagnostics and data-driven approaches all have enormous potential to help people stay healthier for longer and support more sustainable healthcare services. However, technology only delivers value when it is successfully integrated into clinical pathways, embraced by healthcare professionals and designed around the needs of patients. 

Across the West Midlands, we are uniquely placed to seize this opportunity. A recent review commissioned by Health Innovation West Midlands identified more than 200 health and care academic assets across the region, backed by almost £200 million in annual health research income, nine universities, five medical schools and more than 11,000 health and care graduates entering the workforce each year. The review also highlighted nationally significant strengths in areas including artificial intelligence, clinical trials, diagnostics, digital health, maternal and neonatal health, ageing and rehabilitation. Together, these assets provide a powerful foundation for delivering both better health outcomes and sustainable economic growth. 

These strengths matter because they align closely with the challenges facing health and care systems today: prevention, health inequalities, long-term conditions, digital transformation and early diagnosis. Yet our review also identified a recurring challenge. Despite the depth of expertise across the region, too many assets remain disconnected from one another. The opportunity now is not simply to generate more innovation, but to connect our research, NHS, industry and community strengths in ways that accelerate adoption and maximise impact.  

This is where the future success of the UK health and life sciences sector will be won. The regions that succeed will not necessarily be those that make the greatest number of discoveries. They will be those that create the strongest pathways from research to real-world implementation, enabling innovations to move more rapidly from laboratory to clinic and from pilot projects to population-level benefit. 

The West Midlands has all the ingredients needed to lead this next chapter. Our challenge, and our opportunity, is to connect our strengths in research, healthcare, industry and innovation more effectively than ever before. 

As we celebrate our health and life sciences sector, we should remember that the true measure of success is not the number of breakthroughs we create, but the difference those breakthroughs make to people's lives. Discovery will always matter. But if the last decade was defined by innovation, the next must be defined by adoption. That is where the greatest opportunity lies for patients, for the NHS and for the future growth of UK life sciences.
