About the programme

Through the West Midlands Patient Safety Collaborative, Health Innovation West Midlands is working with providers, Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) and regional partners to support delivery of PSIRF Insight to Improvement across the West Midlands.

Our role is to bring together and support patient safety, PSIRF and improvement colleagues across the region, strengthening relationships and developing a shared understanding of the safety and improvement infrastructure already in place. This will help identify opportunities, gaps and areas where further support may be needed.

Programme Ambitions

Our ambition is to strengthen the conditions that enable organisations and systems across the West Midlands to translate learning into sustainable improvement.

During 2026/27, we will work with partners to understand improvement capability and readiness across the region, identify areas of good practice and shared challenges, and support systems to develop plans that strengthen improvement capability and address identified safety and improvement priorities.

Key Principles

Our West Midlands approach focuses on:

• working collaboratively across provider, ICB and regional levels;
• connecting patient safety, PSIRF and improvement colleagues and strengthening relationships across systems;
• building and strengthening safety improvement networks and opportunities for shared learning;
• supporting leaders to understand their role in enabling and overseeing improvement;
• using diagnostic approaches to understand existing infrastructure, capability, gaps and opportunities; and
• using learning and insight to inform improvement planning and target support where it is most needed.

Shared learning across the Midlands

Health Innovation West Midlands is working collaboratively with Health Innovation East Midlands to develop a shared learning/Community of Practice offer across the Midlands, supporting relationship-building and opportunities for shared learning across systems.
